212 AD: Rome: Reign of Emperor Caracalla(to 217). He extends citizenship to all free inhabitants of the Roman empire.

220-264AD: China: Period of the Three Kingdoms when the Han empire is divided into three Kingdoms: the Wei in the north, the Wu in the southeast, and the Shu Han in the west. Luoyang is the capital. Period ends when general Sima Yen seizes power and unifies China under the Western Jin dynasty.

222 AD: Rome: Alexander Serverus is emperor

226 AD: Persia: Ardashir founds Sassanian dynasty. Rule to 242.

230 AD: Japan: First emperor of Japan, Sujin

235 AD: Rome: Maximus is made emperor

250 AD: Rome: Decius is emperor. Emperor worship is made compulsory.

260 AD: Shapur I captures Valerian in battle; Valerian dies in captivity. Gallienus becomes emperor(to 268). Period of Thirty Tyrants(a group who tried to control the empire) begins in Rome.

265 AD: China is reunited under Western Chin Dynasty

268 AD: Greece: Goths sack Athens, Corinth II rules(to 270).

275 AD: Rome: Emperor Tacitus rules until killed by his troops in 276.

284 AD: Rome: Reign of Emperor Diocletian(to 305).

286 AD: Diocletian divides the Roman empire into two rules the eastern empire; Maximian rules the western empire.

303 AD: Eastern Roman empire: Diocletian orders persecution of the Christians. They are banned from the army and public service. Churches and Christiams are killed.

306 AD: Eastern Roman empire: Constantine I, the Great, becomes emperor(to 337).

312 AD: In battle of Milvian Bridge, Constantine defeats Maxentius. Constantine converts to Christianity.

313 AD: Edict of Toleration

320 AD: India: Chandragupta I, ruler in northern India founds Gupta Dynasty

324 AD: Rome: Constantine reunites Roman Empire

330 AD: Rome: Constantine inaugurates new city of Constantinople, on the city of Byzantium

335 AD: India: Emperor Samudragupta extends the Gupta empire to the northwest(to 375). Although the empire expands it is still confined to northern India only and is not as large as the earlier Mautyan empire. This is the classic period of Hindu India.

337 AD: Constantine is baptized on his deathbed. The empore is divided among his three sons, Constantius, Constantine II, and Constans I. Shapur II of Persia wages war with eastern Roman strongholds(to 350), but fails in his efforts to capture them.

351 AD: Rome: Julian tries to reintroduce paganism instead of Christianity

370 AD: Huns from Asia invade Europe

372 AD: Korea: Buddhism is introduced into the country.

400 AD: South America: Incas established on parts of South American Pacific coast.

406 AD: Vangdals and other barbarians overrun Gaul (France)

407 AD: First Mongol Empire is founded

432 AD: Ireland: St. Patrick begins mission.

434 AD: Attila rules the Huns(to 453).

440 AD: Leo the Great becomes Pope

452 AD: Attila the Hun invades Gaul and Italy. He is repulsed by Franks, ALemanni, and Romans at the battle of Chalons. Italy: Venice founded by refugees from the Huns. Pope Leo I negotiates with Attila the Hun for the withdtawal of the Huns from Itatly.

465 AD: India: White Huns dominate northern part of the country.

481 AD: Clovis is king of the Franks(to 511).

496 AD: Clovis converts to Christianity

500 AD: Angles and Saxons start settling in England.
