In this painting of the death of Socrates, Socrates' followers meet with him
for the final time. Socrates was convicted on two charges, corrupting the youth
and neglect of the gods. In Greece, violating the religion was an offense like
murder, rape, arson. As Americans we don't understand this because we have a
separation of church and state. Socrates was given a choice when convicted,
he could leave and be banished forever or death. Socrates chose death because
he felt if he chose banishment, it was an admittance of guilt.
