Battle in ancient times was very brutal. Soldiers would clash against each other in full force. The shield walls were so large that usually the winner was the one that turned his back. Injuries from these battles were mostly fatal. Medicine was not very good, and infections were uncontrolled. Most soldiers were armed with a shield, helmet, and either a sword or spear. Soldiers had very little protection.
